Lovely antique silver buttons, depicting the mythical Roman god Neptune or the Greek Poseidon. The Greek myth held that Poseidon struck the Acropolis with his trident, and a spring of water emerged, or in some versions a horse. The button shows Poseidon with his trident, riding on a shell among scrolls or waives, and the horse rising out of the water. The silver has a flat back and loop shank. The image is pierced, with nice crisp modelling. Hallmarked with the maker’s initials WH (on the left) and with the anchor for Birmingham, lion for sterling silver and date letter “a” for 1900 (on the right.) A lovely collectable.
